Physical Description: This fireplace screen has a slightly scalloped bottom and is attached by hooks to a brass rod. The embroidered floral design includes red, cream, and beige roses. Both beads and yarn are woven into the piece. There is a multi-colored cording along the edges of the tapestry with fringe along the bottom edge. There are tassles at each side of the top edge. It is backed with black fabric.
Description: This beautifully embroidered and beaded fireplace screen is an example of Berlin work, which was especially popular during the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century. Fireplace screens were both decorative and useful, since they protected one's face when sitting close to the fire. This piece came from the estate of Sarah Elizabeth Ferris Cowles Fuller (1915-1973).
