Description: | As the world's first couturier, Charles Frederick Worth dressed European royalty and the nouveau riche in exclusive yet uniform fashion. In 1868 he narrowed skirts and introduced the back bustle, a revolution so wide-spread that industry soon began delivering less expensive imitations, like this American-made evening gown worn in Indiana. |
