Distant Big Belts

Distant Big Belts - Painting
Accession #: 3579.1
Title: Distant Big Belts
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Landscape in wide brush strokes; primarily sky.
Description: Four decades spent looking, absorbing and just painting have combined with a fifteen year foundation of action painting and its formal concerns to allow the recent work to breath with spontaneity and intelligence. It is the spontaneity of the eye-hand coordination of drawing now fully realized in the paintings. It is the intelligence of a complete understanding of a formal approach to composition which Freemen intuitively follows of violates, making each painting a surprise and a mystery. The paintings emerge from this complex layering of processes reverberating with the joy that Freeman feels for the act of painting itself — Johanna Hays, 1991
