Joseph Kimmel, pictured on the left in a photograph taken at the Spokane Art Center, began drawing at the age of eight. Attending high school in Spokane, Washington, he cartooned for the Lewis & Clark Journal and later studied cartooning and art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. He studied painting in France and Italy and at Columbia University with Andre Ihote, Mariam Roberts, and Don Kingman. Stationed in Africa and Italy during three years of World War II service, he found time to draw, paint watercolors, and draw cartoons for the Stars and Stripes in Naples. Serving for nearly 25 years as the Art Director of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States in Washington D.C., he was in change of nearly all graphics. He spent three years on the art staff of Fortune Magazine and drew cartoons and other art for the Portland Oregonian and The Spokesman-Review in Spokane. While working at The Spokesman-Review, Kimmel attended the Spokane Art Center and studied lithography.The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture owns eight lithographs by Joseph Kimmel.
