Biography/History: Elizabeth M. Luchau Stumpf was born in Norman County, MN in about 1865. Her parents, Johann (John) Peter Luchau (1827-1895) and Gesghe (Jessie) Augustine Luchau (1834-1897) were from the German state of Lower Saxony. Johann immigrated in 1856, settling first in Goodhue County, MN. After 23 years, he wanted more land and moved to Norman County. . On 3 December 1883, Elizabeth Luchau married Karl (Charles) Stumpf. Charles’s parents also farmed in Goodhue County, MN. Christian Wilhelm Stumpf (1832-1927) and Eva (1842-1916) were both from Germany having immigrated in 1851 and 1852, respectively. Elizabeth and Charles moved to Spokane County’s Moran Prairie at some point between the birth of Walter, their fourth child in c. 1892 and Laura, who was born in Washington c. 1899. The family quit the farm at some point before the 1920 census and moved to 830 E. 31st Avenue, Spokane. Charles Stumpf died on 12 February 1933 and Elizabeth died on 3 July 1940.
