Biography/History: Born in Japan in 1926, Hanae Mori suspended her university studies during World War II, then married the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer. After a few years of homemaking she returned to study fashion, and opened her first Tokyo dress studio in 1951. In Paris in 1960, she had a fitting with Coco Chanel that kindled her dream of designing haute couture. By 1965, she had launched her own collection,"East Meets West," presented in New York, and had orders from prestigious stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and I. Magnin. In 1975 she moved to France and in 1977 opened an atelier, Haute Couture Maison, in Paris, commuting between Paris and Tokyo after that. Her east-meets-west designs appealed to Japan's Masako, as well as Princess Grace of Monaco, Nancy Reagan, and Hillary Clinton. Mori presented her last haute couture collection in Paris in July 2004.
