Biography/History: Florence Kant Preston was born 2 Dec. 1901 in Oshkosh, WI, the only child of Herman O. Kant and Helen L. Gernatis Kant*, who had immigrated from Germany c.1897. Helen was listed in 1900 Oshkosh census as a dressmaker. The Kants divorced in 1917; Herman apparently died in 1919. By the 1920 Oshkosh census, student Florence Kant (18) was living with her grandmother Constance Gernatis, uncles Max (41) and Joseph (22), and aunt Amanda (30). Florence had moved to Spokane, WA by 1923, when she married railroad worker Arnold A. Preston in Spokane. The couple had one daughter, Dorothy (age 5 in 1930 census), who died in 1936. The couple was living in Clayton, WA when Arnold Preston passed away in 1968, survived by his wife Florence (Kant) Preston and sister, Rena (Preston) Miller of Orange, CA (donor of quilt 2240.1). Florence died on 23 Sep 1998 in Spokane.
