Biography/History: Bertha Louise Krause was born in 1883 or 1884 to Frederick and Bertha Krause in Germany. Bertha immigrated to the US in 1904 (1920 census) and became a naturalized citizen by the 1940 census. Bertha married Rudolf August (or August Rudolf) Schimanski on 22 May 1909 in Spokane. Rudolf also emigrated from Germany in 1904 and was later naturalized. Rudolf was variously referred to as an ironworker, a machinist, or an automobile mechanic. The couple had two children, Paul and Eleanor and lived on East Hartson Avenue for many years. Rudolf died in 1951. Bertha Schimanski died on 8 May 1946; buried at Greenwood Memorial Terrace on 11 May 1946. Her death notice reads in part: Bertha Louise Schimanski passed away this city 8 May. Wife of Rudolf, mother of Mrs. Eleanor Willard and Paul Schimanski, grandmother of Donna Mae Willard, all of Spokane, sister of Freda Krauel of Spokane and Carl Krause of Germany. Bertha Schimanski lived in Spokane for 42 years.
