Anderson, Mathilda

Last Name: Anderson
First Name: Mathilda
Dates:
1858 - 1936 (Life/Active Dates)
Biography/History: Mathilda Anderson was born in Sweden around 1858, immigrated to America around 1882, and was in Minneapolis between 1882 and 1905, when she had her portrait made at Anton Larson’s photography studio. A sister Amanda (c1873-after 1951) likely immigrated with Mathilda. By 1892 Amanda had married Roland McQuillan in Minnesota; by 1900 the McQuillan family had relocated to Spokane, Washington, where she worked as a dressmaker. Amanda likely drew her sister Mathilda to Spokane. In 1908 Mathilda appeared in Spokane city directories, working first as a finisher and later a “furrier” at The Crescent department store until 1918. From 1924 to 1926 Mathilda worked as a finisher for another downtown Spokane fur company, C. E. Carlson & Co, located in the Jamison building. Mathilda was listed as a seamstress in 1930, and died in 1936. Her obituary mentioned another relative Freda Anderson Cheatham (b.1885, immigrated 1902), who was naturalized and worked as a domestic in Spokane from 1909-1912 before marrying clothing company owner James Cheatham in 1913. Another sister Augusta (1869-1951) married a Great Falls, Montana clothing store merchant, Andrew Thisted in 1894 and raised a family there.
