Physical Description: Officer's dress cap of olive drab green wool with brown leather bill and belt-like trim and gold insignia. Two gold buttons featuring eagle insignia on each side hold belt trim. Hat has four riveted air vents, two on each side with light brown leather headband inside. Silver bow tied on back and gold silk lining.
Description: John Happy served in the U. S. Army in World War I, taking his first officer's training in April 1917 at the Presidio in San Francisco. He reported for duty May 13, 1917. In August 1917, he was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the Cavalry and reported for duty at Fort Lewis the same month. He was recommissioned 2nd Lt. in the Artillery and assigned to the 316th Ammunition Train 91st Division. He served in France between June 1918 and May 1919 and was discharged as a 1st Lt. Artillery.
