Helen Campbell - Painting
Accession #: 3794.1
Title: Helen Campbell
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Campbell, Helen (depicted)
Physical Description: Small watercolor of Helen Campbell as a child (age 4) in ruffled white dress with small bar pin at center front of her dress. Framed in 1998; marbled blue mat with circular opening to show watercolor; set into an antiqued gold-colored frame.
Description: Amasa and Grace Campbell doted on their only child, daughter Helen (1892-1964). When she was four years old, artist Rachel Tayler captured her likeness in this watercolor. At that time, the family was living in Wallace, Idaho, near the silver and lead mines that brought fortune to their family. Two years later, the Campbells built a substantial home in Spokane's Browne's Addition, where Helen grew up with new opportunities for 20th century women. She enjoyed golf and riding horses, exercised her newly-gained right to vote, and learned to drive a car, while still following traditions like a formal debut and a Grand Tour and year of schooling in Paris.
