(Cornucopia) Quilt

(Cornucopia) Quilt - Quilt
Accession #: 4440.1
Title: (Cornucopia) Quilt
Object Type: Quilt
Participants:
Weaver, Ruth (creator)
Physical Description: The quilt's 42 blocks are arranged in seven rows, with six blocks in each row. Twenty-one pieced blocks alternate with 21 blocks of solid green. Each pieced block consists of seven kite-shaped pieces of print fabrics and one larger kite-shaped piece of solid pink fabric, all of which are appliqued onto a solid cream background. Fabrics include: prints, geometric designs, plaids, and novelty prints (including small silhouettes of James K. Polk and James Monroe). The pieced blocks are quilted with diagonal lines, and the quilting design in the solid squares echoes the motif in the pieced blocks. The backing, which is the same green fabric as the solid squares, was brought to the front for the edge treatment.
Description: Ruth French Weaver (1907-1988) used a delightful variety of fabric scraps from the 1940s - 1970s to piece her quilt. She and her niece, Spokane resident Beth Riley, quilted it during the 1980s. Ruth was born in Kansas, but, as an adult, lived in Spokane, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital. She also lived in Missoula; Metaline Falls; and Huetter, Idaho.
