Description: In 1942 the Spokane local of the Bartender's Union issued by-laws that stated: "No one but a person of Caucasian race can be or is eligible to membership in this organization and must either be a citizen or show proof of his intention to become such." Inland Northwest organized labor has a long story, including the Western Federation of Miners and the IWW Free Speech movement. Some unions were deeply racist or used divisions among their ranks to break strikes or undermine solidarity. Others offered minorities opportunities to improve their conditions and status.
