Biography/History: Mabel Cotter grew up primarily in Omaha, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado. Her father, Irish-born James Lambert Cotter was engaged in mining in the Black Hills and Colorado, and also worked in the Omaha publishing business. In 1904 Mabel married Spokane-based mining investor, Volney D. Williamson, and the couple took an extended European honeymoon, returning in March 1905. Mabel, apparently, preferred life away from Spokane, spending a great part of each year in New York City. By 1910, after the deaths of Mabel’s mother and 2 siblings, Mabel’s father and sister Mary Elizabeth were living with the Williamsons; they briefly occupied Amasa and Grace Campbell’s Spokane home in Browne’s Addition while the Campbells were in Europe. Around the time that James died in Spokane in 1915, Mabel and Volney were in the midst of a widely-publicized divorce. Before Volney’s death in 1936, Mabel had bought another home in Browne’s Addition (2124 W 2nd), where she lived with her sister and their brother Harry. Mabel outlived her sister (d.1941) and brother (d.1946) and died in 1958 following 18 months as a patient at Eastern Washington State Hospital.
