Biography/History: | The Western Union Life Insurance Company was incorporated on October 31, 1906 by several prominent Spokane bankers, business, and professional men. Included among them were banker Robert Rutter, mill owner J. P. McGoldrick, and Henry Richards of Washington Water and Power. It represented a union of financial and business interests in the Pacific Northwest intent on keeping capital within the region. The stock-holders elected a board of directors, which included Louis Davenport. Business commenced on November 23, 1906, and by 1907, the company was writing more insurance policies than any other Washington-based insurance carrier. Within six years, Western Union Life, headquartered in Spokane, had offices in four northwestern states. Western Union Life had a successful twenty-year run until the Sun Life Assurance Company of Montreal, Canada purchased the company in 1928. It was Sun Life’s second U. S. acquisition following the purchase of the Cleveland Life Insurance Company in 1926. Sun Life maintained an office in Spokane into the 1980s. |
