Waddell, Theodore

Last Name: Waddell
First Name: Theodore
Dates:
1941 (Date of Birth)
Biography/History: Theodore Waddell was born on October 6, 1941 in Billings, MT and grew up in Laurel, MT. He currently splits his time between his house in Sheridan, MT and his ranch in Sun Valley, ID. He received his BS from Montana State University in Billings in 1966 and his MFA in 1968 from Wayne State University in Detroit. His art teacher at Eastern Montana College, Isabelle Johnson influenced his decision to pursue art, as he says: “within two weeks of meeting Isabelle Johnson at Eastern in 1959, I’d decided I didn’t care about doing anything except making art.” After completing his MFA he taught art at the University of Montana until he quit to pursue ranching and his own art. While ranching he changed from making sculpture to painting because of the sense of scale difference between the closed-in mountains of Missoula and the wide-open plains of Molt. Particularly of influence were the herds of angus cattle he was hired to take care of. In addition to the influences of his environment, other influences were Isabelle Johnson, Bill Stockton (locally), and Abstract Expressionists (while he worked in New York City in the early 1960s).
