Biography/History: |
The Moulton family, who settled in Newbury, Massachusetts (later Newburyport) at the end of the 18th century, originated the Towle silver business. After six generations of Moulton silversmiths, Joseph Moulton inherited the business, and sold it in 1857 to his father's two apprentices, Anthony Francis Towle and William P. Jones, who formed Towle & Jones, Co. In 1873, Anthony’s son, Edward Bass Towle, joined the business, and the name changed to A.F. Towle & Son. That business continued through 1902, at which point Rogers, Lunt and Bowlen purchased their dies, and later became Lunt Silversmiths. In 1882, Anthony Francis Towle, while still owning A.F. Towle & Son, established the Towle Manufacturing Co. The trademark of a large script "T" enclosing a rampant lion was adopted in 1890. Towle, was acquired in 1990 by Syratech Corporation, a company which makes tabletop, giftware, and seasonal items. Its tabletop and giftware lines include sterling silver, silver-plated, and stainless steel flatware and hollowware under the Wallace Silversmiths, Towle Silversmiths, and International Silver Company brand names. |
