When Carrie Adele Green met Robert Strahorn, he was a young reporter recently hired by Jay Gould, titan of the Union Pacific Railroad. Gould wanted publicity materials written and surveys made of railroad expansion opportunities in the West. Unlike most brides, who stayed home, Carrie Strahorn roamed with her husband through Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Idaho, and Washington for the next thirteen years. The couple lived in Boston 1890-1898 before settling in Spokane in 1898, purchasing the J.J. Browne family home and updating it with architect Kirtland Cutter’s help. Robert Strahorn actively promoted electric power and railroad expansion, and his wife was a leading social figure, entertaining extensively. She published their travel adventures in Fifteen Thousand Miles By Stage in 1911, and continued to accompany Robert during business travel. In 1911 the Strahorns hosted an opulent event at Davenport’s Restaurant for their 34th wedding anniversary and to celebrate publication of Carrie’s book, Fifteen Thousand Miles By Stage. A replica stagecoach scene filled one end of the Hall of the Doges for the event, and Carrie received a silver program commemorating the event.
