He lived in Seattle, WA as a Studio Assistant at Pottery Northwest, Seattle, WA between College and Graduate School. Between 1974 and 1986 he served as Artist-in-Residence and Director of Ceramics at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities in Idaho, while there he organized a conference on the Criticism of Clay. He also served as Professor Emeritus of Art at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR between 1986 and 2005 before moving on to the Eagleheart Project in New Mexico. He chose to work with Raku because of its significant history (began in 15th C Japan), its well developed and documented aesthetics, and its contemporary use as means for artistic expression. He considers his process to be “painting with smoke” to add dimension of color, depth and surface to the artworks he creates.
