Biography/History: Mrs. Hilda (Ole Olsen) Emang donated a Norwegian trunk to the museum in 1953. The trunk is painted with a rosemaling design and the name Kristine Ellingsdatter Nyhus 1875. Kristine’s name and date have been painted over another name (?her mother’s name Eli Olufsdatter) and the date 1849. Kristine Ellingsdatter Nyhus (Nyhus is the farm name) was born November 24, 1857, Lonset, Sor Trondelag, Norway (parish records). Her parents are Elling Gundersen Nyhus and Eli Olufsdatter Hoel. Kristine and her parents are listed on the Norway 1865 and 1875 census, name of domicile—Nyhus, name of municipality - Oppdal (Norwegian Historical Data Centre). In 1865 Kristine is listed as daughter and in 1875 her occupation is Sypige (seamstress). Kristine is not listed on the 1900 census. She married John Olsen Emang (Emang is the name of the farm) June 19, 1878, Lonset, Norway (parish records). John Olsen was born ?Dec 17, 1848?, Lonset, Sor Trondelag (parish records) and listed in the 1865 Norway census on the Emang domicile, municipality - Oppdal. His occupation was Gaardbr Selveier (owner, freeholder). In the 1875 census none of the family from the 1865 census lived on the Emang farm. In the 1875 census John Olsen Emang was listed in municipality- Storen, name of domicile – Tangen, occupation – Tommerhugger (logger), family status – Logerende (lodger). Kristine and John had two children born in Norway – Ole, b. July 10, 1879 and Oluf, b. March 11, 1881, Lonset (parish records). The Emigration Records 1881-1882, county Sor Trondelag, parish Oppdal, listed the Emang family as going to Amerika and the date June 4, 1882 (in Norwegian so translation needed): Gbr. Jon Olsen Emang 1848 (think Gbr. means owner of farm) Kristi Ellingsdtr. Nyhus 1856 Ole Jonsen 1879 Oluf Jonsen 1881 Ung R (?) Jon Olsen Emang 1854 (?brother of Jon, is on the 1865 census with John). We know Kristine and John had at least two more children in the US – John b. Nov 27, 1884 (SS Death Index) and Klara b. 1883 or 1889 (1910 US census for Spokane). They might have been born in South Dakota. We do not know where John and Kristine entered the US nor where they settled. Have not been able to find any death records for them. Have also not been able to find any mention of Oluf Emang anywhere in the US. However, every mention of Ole Emang in the US lists his birthdate as March 11, 1881. Ole Emang ( is this Oluf Johnsen Emang?) was born on March 11, 1881, according to his WWI draft registration card and was a citizen of Norway (living at the Riverside Hotel in Spokane). He is in the 1910 US census in Spokane but listed as 24, born in Wisconsin, and his parents were born in Ireland, occupation laborer. Ole is in the Spokane City Directory 1911. According to the 1930 US Census (Ritzville, WA) he was born about 1881 in South Dakota. He married Hilda Benn on April 14, 1929 (Certificate of Marriage). It lists his age as 48 and his birthplace as Yankton, SD. He died in Cheney, August 8, 1952, born abt 1881, age 71 (WA Death Index). It was Ole’s wife Hilda who donated the trunk and other articles to the museum. John Johnsen Emang was born October 27, 1884, and was a US citizen according to his WWI draft registration card (living in Genesee, Latah county, ID, working for a farmer). He was listed in the 1910 census in Spokane as 28, born in Wisconsin, parents born in Ireland, occupation laborer. In the 1920 census in Spokane he was listed as 35, born in South Dakota, parents born in Norway. He married Minnie White in Spokane on April 25, 1925 (Certificate of Marriage). He is listed as 44, born in South Dakota. He died in WA in Feb. 1965. The SS Death Index lists his birthdate as Nov 27, 1884. Clara Emang is found in the 1910 US Census in Spokane. She is listed as 21, born in South Dakota, parents born in Norway, occupation clerk. She is in the Spokane City Directory 1911. Eli Olufsdatter Hoel (Is this the name on the trunk underneath Kristine’s?) is the mother of Kristine. Eli was born September 25, 1818, Oppdal, Sor Trondelag, Norway. Her parents were Oluf Olsen and Anna Nielsdatter. She married Elling Gundersen Nyhus on June 29, 1851, Lonset, Norway (familysearch.org). She died Feb. 5, 1902, Oppdal, Sor Trondelag.
