Biography/History: | Herman Keys produced in his over 50-year career largely realist images of the human condition: individuals and groups trapped in inner-city hopelessness, waste and decay. Keys was talented in art, writing and music but his deepest love was the violin. As a young many he played in Hollywood orchestras and during his short career was a featured solo violinist. Keys endured total bed rest from tuberculosis for five years before the disease was arrested. However, painful bursitis developed in his right shoulder as a result of the disease and thereby ended his violin career. Undaunted, Keys turned to his second talent, the visual arts. He taught at Whitworth College from 1953-1970. Keys developed an art program for the disabled at the Spokane Rehabilitation Center, where he taught without pay for 17 years. |
