| Biography/History: | Jane “Jennie” Whittingslow Dean was born 16 May 1866 in Colchester, Illinois. Her parents were William Whittingslow (1822-1883) and Susan Wood (1834-1879). Both were from Brierly Hill, Staffordshire, England. William Whittingslow was a coal miner. It is not known when Jennie arrived in Washington, but she married James Curtis Dean on 20 October 1889, while visiting her sister Phoebe in San Francisco. The couple's only son, Iris Chester Dean, was born in 1890. Before 1918, Jennie and James were divorced and Jennie moved to Hoquiam, Washington. She never remarried. Jennie died on 26 July 1952 in Hoquiam, Washington. The donor of Jennie's quilt, Ethel Workman, was the stepdaughter of Jennie and James Dean's son Iris Chester. |
