Biography/History: Helen Huneke was born on May 12, 1905 in Spokane, Washington to William August Henry Huneke (1864-1946), a Supreme Court Judge, and Laura Grace Crook (1874-1954), both of Ohio. Helen had two brothers, Bradford (1904-1910) and John S. (1909-2001) and the family lived at 314 Park Place. Helen’s maternal grandparents and aunt Corinth Crook (1862-1953) lived around the corner at 313 W. Euclid Avenue. After her graduation from North Central High School, Helen’s aunt Corinth took her on a study trip to Germany, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. Aunt Corinth was the ideal European traveling companion. She possessed a Ph.D. in German and was the head of the Modern Languages department at Lewis & Clark High School, where she taught French. Corinth and Helen departed from New York on board the S. S. Mongolia on March 29, 1924, returning from Cherbourg, France on August 6, 1924 on board the S. S. America. Aunt Corinth later took Helen’s younger brother John to Hawaii in 1926, the year he graduated from North Central High School. After high school, Helen Huneke attended Stanford University, studying to become a teacher. She taught for a year in Wilbur, Washington, ultimately returning to Spokane. She worked for District 81 as a secretary at both North Central High School and Lewis and Clark High School. Helen Huneke died in Spokane on March 11, 1997.
