Biography/History: Yuji Hiratsuka received an M.F.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1990, an M.A. from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces in 1987, and a B.S. from Tokyo Gakugei University in 1978. Since 1992 he has been Assistant Professor of Printmaking at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Hiratsuka has been awarded one-person exhibitions throughout the United States and Japan. His prints can be found in many private and public collections, among them the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture and Jundt Art Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Tokyo Central Museum, and the British Museum in London. Hiratsuka is represented by Azuma Gallery in Seattle, among others. Hiratsuka explores the chaotic coexistence of Japan's ancient/traditional philosophies and contemporary Western society. Hiratsuka (like Shimomura) is also influenced by the traditional 17th and 19th century Japanese woodblocks of the Ukiyo-e school. |Information taken from an artist biography in accession file #3942.
