Hara, Keiko

Last Name: Hara
First Name: Keiko
Dates:
1942 (Date of Birth)
Biography/History: Keiko Hara (Japanese, 1942) was born in what is now North Korea during World War II. Her family returned to Japan in 1945, and Hara grew up steeped in postwar Japanese culture. Although she showed early promise as an artist, she was encouraged by her family, teachers and friends to tread a more traditionally feminine path. Nevertheless, she went to Tokyo after high school to pursue the arts and supported her art by becoming a teacher. While in Japan, she grew interested in the new field of art therapy and experimented with different ages and abilities of students. She decided to pursue her education in these fields in the United States. However, once she landed in New York and visited several museums there, she knew she wanted to focus on her own art. She is currently a professor of Art at Whitman College in Walla Walla. She likes to work with forms that have energy and presence.
