Biography/History: | He was born Dec. 11, 1923, in Eugene, the first child of Howard Sr. and Marjory Hall. He died June 1, 2002, in Coos Bay. A fifth-generation Oregonian, Howard was raised in the family home, now on the historical register in Eugene. He graduated from Eugene's University High in 1942 and attended the University of Oregon, where he was an active member of the Phi Delt fraternity group. Howard served in the U.S. Army 100th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon returning to Oregon, he married Bea Gay and completed his degree at the University of Oregon in 1949, becoming the fourth generation of Hall family members to graduate from the university. Howard went on to earn his master of fine arts degree, graduating in 1951. Howard and Bea moved to Klamath Falls, where he worked in the Klamath County School District as head of the art department and supervisor of art for the district. In 1964, the family moved to Coos Bay, where Howard as an associate professor, developed the art department for Southwestern Oregon Community College. He started teaching courses in an annex for the college at the North Bend Airport and was instrumental in moving the department to several sites on campus. Howard retired from Southwestern Oregon Community College in 1985. Throughout his life, Howard was an active artist. He had an extensive collection and his favorite medium was oils. |
