Haddad

Name: Haddad, Incorporated
Biography/History: Mary H. Haddad (17 Feb 1892- 18 Nov 1982) Bagdad Bazaar (active 1916-1922) Haddad Inc (active by 1928-1957) Mary H. Haddad and husband A.A. Haddad were both born in Syria, emigrated separately to America around 1900, and married around 1913. They first appeared in Spokane in 1914, with A.A. Haddad and S.S. Kahl operating a rug store at W 831 Sprague, in the new Davenport Hotel. A.A. Haddad operated the business as Bagdad Bazaar from 1916-1922, perhaps switching to clothing sales in 1920. In 1928, the store featured women’s furnishings, incorporated as Haddad Inc., with A.A. as president and Mary H. as secretary. By 1932 the couple had separated, and Mary was operating the store as company president and living in the Davenport Hotel. From 1932-1942, Mary’s brother Edward Haddad and his wife Gladys joined her in operating the business, expanding it to include W 831-833 Sprague. After World War II ended, Mary and her sister Rose opened an additional store, Haddad’s Budget Shop, which also sold women’s furnishings at nearby 11 S Lincoln; that venture closed in 1952, perhaps when Rose married and returned to Brooklyn. Edward and Gladys returned to Spokane that same year to re-join Mary in the business, but they closed the store in 1957. Mary remained in Spokane, passing away at age 90 in 1982. She was buried in Brooklyn, NY.
