Biography/History: | Cheryl Stuart was one of the first few Police Women in the Spokane Police Department. She, Joan Smick, and Denise Coker had joined the Department by 1973. The women were not assigned to the streets or patrol cars, but worked primarily in investigations. They made their own uniforms and chose their own hats. A Police Woman earned the same salary as a Police Man, but was required to have a college degree. Soon after these women joined the Department, a class action suit led to the less gender-specific classification of Police Officer. (notes from M.Rooney interview with Cheryl Graves, 2005) |
