Biography/History: Frida Katharina Blank was born on 13 June 1906 in Tüngental, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Six months before her twentieth birthday, in January 1926, she emigrated to the United States aboard the ocean liner the S. S. Stuttgart, ultimately settling in Spokane. In 1929, she married fellow German, from Oberlenningen, Gottlieb Goelz (1905-c. 1931-32). Gottlieb had emigrated to the U. S. in 1924. Their son, Johannes Hans Goelz, was born in Spokane in October 1931. Around the time of Johannes’s birth, Gottlieb died. At the time, Frida was working as a servant in a private home, but she was also listed in certain records as a “cateress.” In 1936, Frida married Walter Faehnel (1905-?), a hotel clerk from Wisconsin, who was of German extraction. Together, Frida and Walter had a daughter, Elaine, born in 1940. At some point, Walter Faehnel drops from the record. It is presumed he either died or the couple divorced. In 1961, Frida married the Swedish emigrant from Boden, Sweden, Nels (Nils) Walfrid Gideon Holm (1957-1990). The couple continued to live in Spokane. Frida Holm died on 9 November 1981. She was survived by her husband Nels and her daughter Elaine Faehnel Novak, who was living in Glessen, Germany with her son Sean and husband Gottlieb Novak. Nels Holm died on 11 July 1990.
