Biography/History: Boston Arts and Crafts silver- and coppersmith Frans (aka Frederick) J. R. (Julius Reinhold) Gyllenberg was born in Malmö, Sweden on 10 June 1883. He immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1903 and was naturalized in 1905. The U. S. Craftperson Files lists him as Frederick; he hallmarked his work with his initials F. J. R. G. Frans (Frederick) Gyllenberg began working at the famed Handicraft Shop in Boston in 1905 and in 1929 was elected a Medalist Craftsman, the highest honor bestowed by the Society of Arts and Crafts. He was one of only seven silversmiths to receive this prestigious honor. From 1926 to 1932, Frans worked in partnership with Alfred Swanson. His career seems to have ended in 1932, during the Great Depression. Frans Gyllenberg remained single throughout his life and he died on 25 September 1974 in Dedham, Massachusetts.
