| Biography/History: | Born Nov. 2, 1776, of an old family of German origin in Lancaster, PA. He was an expert coppersmith who developed a talent for portrait drawing. Early in the century he was aided by visiting artists, and when Thos. Sully visited Lancaster...he directed him to the instruction of Gilbert Stuart in Boston...In the style of Sully and Stuart, he painted over 250 portraits and some landscapes and historical groups, between 1810 and his death in 1842. |
