“Chappie” Dunning came to Spokane around 1904. Her father had been a researcher on Indians for the Smithsonian Institution, and it was from this exposure to Indian culture that Chappie developed a life-long interest in native materials. During her lifetime she built an outstanding collection of Indian artifacts, which was donated to the Eastern Washington State Historical Society. She was married to Joseph W. Dunning and her daugher, Jane Dunning Baldwin, was a well-known Northwest artist. |
