Biography/History: Trapeze artist Leona Dare delighted audiences by hanging by her teeth from circus tents and hot air balloons. Born Susan Stuart in 1855, she learned her trade in New Orleans from Thomas Dare, whom she briefly married. Dare survived several serious accidents to rise to the top of her profession. Billed as “The Comet of 1873,” “The Queen of the Antilles,” and “The Pride of Madrid,” she performed in the United States and Europe. Dare reportedly earned $1000 per week at the height of her career. Leona Dare died in Spokane in 1922, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.
