Biography/History: Carl T. Chew was born in Urbana, Illinois in 1948. He received a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Washington in 1969 and an M.F.A. in Printmaking and Video in 1975. His training in printmaking at the Univeristy of Washington with Bill H. Ritchie provided a basis for exploratory collograph, which used Elmer's glue as a medium. In 1975, he placed himself among a global group of artist who concocted their own postage stamps. Near the end of the 1970's Chew turned to table and desk-top still life. In 1980 and 1981, he created a series of poster format collages dealing with the topic of torture. This proved to be of little economic success. His next sculptural project was "Ralph David, City Planner" which was commissioned for the offices of the Seattle Arts Commission.. In the early 1980's Chew was enthralled with IBIS illustration software and he traced illustrations from Janson's History of Art on to the computer screen in his art.
