Biography/History: | In 1890 Alonzo Miles Murphey (1859-1945) married Madeline Gibbs (1867-1933) in Spokane Falls, Washington. Alonzo operated a real estate trust company and, with Eugene Favre, a mortgage loan, bond and insurance company, Murphey, Favre & Co.. The family lived at 2424 W 2nd in Browne’s Addition, built by Madeline’s mother Mrs. Josephine Gibbs, where they raised three daughters (known to their friends as “the Murphs”): Virginia (1891-1967), Josephine (“Jo”) (1892-1990), and Madeline (1897-1973). The girls shared social events, sewing club activities, golf tournaments, and weddings with other young women of Browne’s Addition, including Helen Campbell. Jo and her sisters were sent to Miss Capen’s School for Girls, Northampton MA to prepare for Smith College, but instead of attending Smith, their father took the whole family to Europe for the years 1908-1911. There, the sisters studied French, attended an English school in Dresden to learn German, and also learned to play golf in Germany. They also readied for their Spokane debut, purchasing kid gloves and gowns in Paris; the debut was the first held at Davenport’s Restaurant and occurred in 1911 shortly after the family returned to Spokane. Jo and Joseph Acheson won several golf championships at Spokane Country Club and Hayden Lake Golf and Country Club, including a 1913 mixed foursome golf championship, when 2nd place went to her sister Virginia and Edward H. Hughes. Jo also won a 1913 trophy at Hayden Lake Country Club. [MAC Collection #3990.] The year 1917 was a busy one for the family: in March Jo married broker Edward V. Carter; the wedding was held in a great hurry, as he was leaving for WWI flight training; in June 1917, Virginia was a bridesmaid at Helen Campbell’s wedding to William Powell, and in December, she married mortgage broker, Herbert Lawrence Barrett. By 1918 the smaller Murphey household had moved to 2418 W 2nd, and in June 1922 Madeline married William McCue Marshall. Jo and Edward Carter lived many years in California, returning to Spokane just before his death in 1967. Their daughter Josephine Duff was living in Kentfield CA when Jo Carter died in 1990. |
