Last Name: Campbell
First Name: Leanne
Dates:
1972 (Date of Birth)
Biography/History: Schi’tsu’umsh, (Coeur d’Alene Tribe of Indians), NiMíiPuu, (Nez Perce Tribe), Sinixt, (Arrow Lakes) and P’squosa (Wenatchee) - Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation) Hntsegwtn = Our Lifeways Leanne Campbell works in many mediums – beading, basketry, garment-making, drawing, painting, and printmaking. She is most drawn to beadwork and basket making. “I studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico majoring in Museum Studies with a minor in Studio Arts. I pursued studio arts to thoroughly understand the materials I might be caring for. I knew I was coming back to a small community with limited resources, so for practical reasons I wanted a broader education.” Living with her grandparents for the first decade of her life, Leanne remembers that her great grandmother was strict and proper with a strong work ethic and a strong connection to family. “My great grandmother spoke Nimipuutímt (the Nez Perce language) and she was a story-teller. She was also a doll-maker, bead-worker and painter. She provided my earliest exposure to culture, language and traditional arts. My great grandmother was a good teacher and provided a strong foundation for the work I do now.” Leanne teaches traditional arts through the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Historic Preservation Program, where she currently serves as the Program Manager and Curator. The Historic Preservation Program is also called “hntsegwtn,” which translates as “our lifeways.” “We are re-introducing our culture through the arts. In the spring we make the traditional folded cedar bark baskets. This process is taught from harvest of cedar bark to a finished basket.” “These are old art forms. Our ancestors perfected these techniques and they’ve been handed down for generations. I appreciate that these time-perfected techniques have been passed on from generation to generation and these techniques are being used and passed forward.” (Exhibition Text - "As Grandmother Taught", 2018-2021)
