Biography/History: | Little is known about Bianchini, a contemporary sculptor who was selected in 1905 by Stokes and Howells, the architects who designed St. Paul's. "Bianchini received the commission with help from two friends at Columbia, and the torchères were his first work after he arrived in the United States, according to a 1988 master's thesis by David Paul Wessel, a student, at the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation. The torchères cost $4,000 at the time. Bianchini died in 1908, right after returning to Italy and two weeks before the dedication. He never saw the final version of his masterworks in bronze." |
