Place: Gallery C
Date From: 12/4/2010
Date To: 4/16/2011
Summary: Mr. Ely’s exquisitely bound books integrate Western and Eastern religious and mystical traditions, astronomy, particle physics, cartography, alchemy, and sacred geometry. Diverse graphic elements such as skeletal structure, the laws of physics and the golden mean are unified in his books by a private written language the artist has been developing since his early years.
Description: Tim Ely began making books at age 8. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in drawing and printmaking from Western Washington University and a Master of Fine Arts in design from the University of Washington. A 1982 National Endowment for the Arts grant enabled him to travel, study and teach in Great Britain, Italy and Japan. He is a major artist and master bookbinder using a variety of techniques, and has taught classes and workshops on traditional and modern techniques in England, Central America and throughout Europe. His lavishly painted and drawn unique manuscript books are in museum and private collections throughout the world including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Library of Congress; the New York Public Library; and in many American university library rare book collections. For the exhibition, Mr. Ely created a 15-feet wide, 10 feet high unique work directly onto the wall of the gallery. The exhibition included a selection of the artist's bookmaking and binding tools, many of which are antiques, and a selection of historic manuscripts from the MAC's Archives and the Gonzaga University Rare Book Collection.
