Description: Although women could not enlist in the regular U.S. forces during World War II, they served in a variety of other ways. Colville, Washington resident, Patricia Starr Kingsbury joined the Navy's WAVES program (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) as soon as she reached the required enlistment age of 20. She chose the WAVES because of the Navy's flight program, but instead found herself working as storekeeper at a Pocatello, Idaho ordnance base before finishing her service at Lake Pend Oreille's Farragut Naval Base. By the time she was discharged in 1946, women could enlist in the regular Navy.
