Physical Description: Woman's hat of maroon velvet belonging to a contemporary Greek costume. Hat is brimless and gathered at the crown. Two rows of gold brickabrack follow the gathering creating a 1.5" circle at the top of the hat. A gold cord is attached to the top of the hat at the crown with a long gold tassel. The edge of the hat is decorated with a black metallic ribbon and 2 rows of gold brickabrack. Hat is lined with white cotton and appears to have been hand made.
Description: People of Greek heritage still don traditional costumes, like this woman's hat, to celebrate their culture. In the 1930s, Greeks from far corners of the region built a community hall in Spokane and began an annual festival that continues today. During World War II they created floats and campaigned to raise funds for their homeland. Then in 1947-48, they worked with a local Japanese American architect to design and construct the elegant Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church.
