| Description: | As a married woman of means, Grace Campbell's lifestyle and her clothing showcased her husband's wealth. Accessories, such as gloves, were no exception; their design, material and fit hinted at a woman's status, and the best were custom-made, sized to the circumference of the woman's palm. Modesty was important, and women wore tight-fitting gloves everywhere. During the day, long sleeves overlapped gloves of mid-forearm length in soft kid leather or cotton lisle. For evening events, silk or kid over-the-elbow gloves with 12 to 20 buttons allowed a woman to remain covered while wearing short-sleeved evening dresses. Grace Campbell wore these long, kid gloves for such occasions. |
