Vera McDonald Portrait

Vera McDonald Portrait - Portrait
Accession #: 3984.1
Title: Vera McDonald Portrait
Object Type: Portrait
Participants:
Physical Description: Oval portrait of a young girl.
Description: Spokane photographer Milton Loryea made this portrait of D.K. McDonald's daughter Vera, circa 1900. Recognizing the value of irrigation, McDonald and partners developed Spokane Valley towns of Opportunity and Veradale, named after McDonald's daughter. The arrival of the railroad, as well as innovative irrigation techniques, transformed the sparsely-populated Spokane Valley into prime fruit orchard and agricultural property at the turn of the 20th century. From the Valley's first permanent settlement by Antoine Plante in 1849, to the incorporation of the City of Spokane Valley in 2003, the area has continued to grow and develop. Today, the Valley's suburban and agricultural fields include incorporated cities of Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, and Millwood. Source: Boutwell, Florence. The Spokane Valley. Vol. 1-3.
