His lifelong interest in Indians came from experiences with the Senecas near his boyhood home in the pine forests of western Pennsylvania. When the family moved to Cincinnati by raft down the rivers, he was apprenticed as a lithographer. Throughout his life Farny worked as an illustrator, primarily for Harper's Weekly. Before settling down in Cincinnati he studied in Dusseldorf, Vienna, and Italy. In Munich, Farny shared a studio with the famous American Impressionist, John Twachtman.
