Physical Description: Watercolor sketch of male rider on horseback. Rider is wearing a hat, neckerchief and gun holster. Painting is separated vertically at center where painting was folded. Painting is attached to a backing board. Note: original dust cover is kept with painting as it shows notes from original owner and other information.
Description: The owner of this unfinished Charles Russell sketch cherished his artwork, folding it tightly into a billfold or pocketbook - and likely pulling it out often to display. The soiled sketch eventually separated into two pieces at the folds. When its owner finally opted to frame the sketch, it was glued onto acidic board; light exposure helped create a burn where acidic mat touched the paper. Both the original owner's family and the eventual museum donor captured the sketch's story in writing. Sometimes the story behind an object is compelling enough that we overlook condition.
