Title: Triplett Fluorimeter
Object Type: Instrument, Chemical

Physical Description: The fluorimeter has a wooden case and metal workings; it is painted black and light green, and there are multiple gauges, knobs, switches, and levers. The Tripplett Model 420 Fluorimeter measures in Microamperes. There is an operation manual (4046.13b) in a red floppy binder associated with the object.
Description: From its founding in 1955 until closure in 1982, Dawn Mining Company operated this fluorimeter daily to grade uranium ore. Amid a national wave of uranium exploration, tribal members had discovered Spokane Indian Reservation ore deposits and had founded Midnite Mine, Inc. The Dawn Mining Company operated both the mine and a yellowcake processing mill in nearby Ford, Washington. When nuclear power interest declined, Midnite Mine closed - later declared an EPA Super Fund cleanup site. At the mill, contaminated structures, soil, and tailings were buried into deep evaporation ponds.
