Physical Description: Miniature traditional Japanese folding purse or wallet, also called a Hakoseko. It has five separate parts. The purse is silk, the pattern of the exterior silk is orange, gold, white, tan, and green geometric floral brocade pattern, the lining and some stitching is red. Part1: Metal charm on pin [hair pin?]. Two pronged pin with round metal charm on the end. Attached to the end charm are seven smaller round charms, attached via lengths of chains. This stuffs inside the purse. Part 2: Silk covered stick with tassel. The red lining is visible on one side near the tassel attachment. The tassel is white at the attachment edge and turns to red at the end of the tassel. This sits on the outside of the purse. Part 3: Silk & red fabric purse wrapper with tassel and silk pouch. Outside is silk, inside is red lining. The tassel attaches to a silk pouch at the far end. This wraps around the purse to hold all the pieces together. Part 4: Purse with mirror and pocket. Silk tri-fold purse with red lining and red stitching. There is a mirror embedded on the inside of the purse. Flat pocket with paper inserted on the verso side. Part 5: White paper folded and taped shut. (Did not open the paper to look at inside at this time). Slid in purse pocket.
Description: This purse with closure, purse and accessory, "Hakoseko", is to be tucked in halfway in kimono near the neck, just above the obi (the wide belt), according to Michiko Takaoka, former director of the Japanese Cultural Center Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute. Given to the MAC, specifically for Miss Tokushima (accession # 812) to replace missing accessories, during her trip to Japan in 2010. Given by the original Doll manufacturer, Yoshitoku Corporation, and the Japanese Borrower, the Tokushima Prefecture Museum. Hakoseko is a traditional Japanese purse, traditional to a wedding day: "A small purse, generally carried by a bride or girls on Girls Day in Japan." (http://www.wafuku.co.uk/glossary.htm)
