The Bowman - Nootka

The Bowman - Nootka - Print, Photographic; Photograph
Accession #: 175.15
Title: The Bowman - Nootka
Object Type: Print, Photographic; Photograph
Participants:
Nootka (depicted)
Physical Description: Photographic print (contact print) of a nude man standing on a rock pointing a bow and arrow into the water.
Description: A contact print is a photographic image produced by placing a negative directly onto light-sensitive paper, then illuminating it to form an image. The contact print is not a photo enlargement. It is always the same size as the original negative. This contact print is the actual size of the heavy glass plate negative Curtis worked with when taking the photograph. A contact print is not meant to be a lasting image for display or publication, but rather is a temporary method of viewing a photograph before final printing. This image was printed in Portfolio 11 of Edward Curtis' "The North American Indian," though this is a copy negative version of that image.
