Description: A native of Mississippi, Seattle artist Randy Hayes began his art career as a designer for TV in Boston. Hayes uses photography and painting to document the culture of places he travels to. In his work, he starts with a photograph and then paints on it, adding the color of his own memory and experience. Often, his intimate work reveals the relationship between a contemporary society and historic details of the past. In this original photograph, taken in a historical Mississippi home, Hayes recalls a past custom of open house salons and parlor visits that no longer exists.
