| Physical Description: | This hand pieced patchwork quilt has an eight point star at its center. Diamond-shaped pieces of fabric radiate out from the star to create a "Sunburst" pattern with triangles filling in the edges. The border fabric is a red and white large floral print. The quilt is hand quilted in diagonal lines and is bound with tape. |
| Description: | The "Sunburst" quilt pattern was popular in the 1820s and 1830s. Although the pattern was used earlier, its popularity may have been influenced by the invention of the kaleidoscope in 1816. This new scientific instrument and toy created a huge sensation both in England and upon its arrival in America in 1818. According to family history, this quilt was made in New York State and "was a prize winner at many fairs." |
