Description: Anderson was born in Edmonds, Washington in 1906. He was one of the four original artists in the Northwest School, gaining national attention after the influential 1953 Life magazine article "Mystic Painters of the Northwest" was published. He lived in seclusion as he got older, in La Conner, Washington, and continued painting until his death. One of his favorite themes was humanity's relationship to the Universe. He often expressed a sense of pre-ordained order in the universe. His art is a blend of his reaction to nature, early exposure to Japanese art, and his reading of Oriental philosophy. This painting demonstrates the muted colors and earth tones, typical of the Northwest School, characterized by the quiet, contemplative spiritualism of Asian art and philosophy with the gray light of the Pacific Northwest.
